Jeff Jarrett held a press conference today in Las Vegas to do a partial roster reveal for his new Global Force Wrestling enterprise, appearing with wife Karen, as well as Sonnen. Sonnen was named as the promotion's color commentator, an interesting move, and a potentially smart one, given his connection to the credible sports world.
Sonnen, 38, is retired from mixed martial arts, giving us a tremendous battle with Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight title in 2010, losing in the fifth round to a triangle choke. The fight was dampened by the revelation afterwards that Sonnen, who dominated most of the battle, tested positive for alarmingly high levels of testosterone. He was suspended for one year, a considerable blow given the amount of hype his off-the-cuff interviews and remarks had generated. Sonnen's last fight was in November 2013, losing to Rashad Evans.
The press conference also revealed that PJ Black (Justin Gabriel), Davey Boy Smith Jr (Harry Smith), Doc Gallows, Karl Anderson, Lance Hoyt, Chris Mordetsky (Masters), Lei'D Tapa, Thea Trinidad (Rosita), and former NFL lineman Quinn Ojinnaka are among the first members of the roster. The first taping is Friday, July 24, at The Orleans in Las Vegas.
Jarrett is reportedly in talks with Jim Ross, who handled English commentary duties for Wrestle Kingdom 9, to partner with Sonnen.
