Can't say I blame them. The only issues I really had with the guy were his weak promos (which not even Rock could save), and the fact that, yes, it feels like Bryan was ditched entirely in favor of an uninteresting Reigns. It's hard to say if fans would have accepted Reigns had they not presented him with the worst scripts this side of Joe Eszterhas, but what's done is done.
What I'd like to know is how much blame, if any, WWE lays on its own creative (especially Vince) for presenting Reigns as a wooden hack.
